Spam or unsolicited bulk email has been growing at ever increasing rates despite the number of countries legislating in an effort to eradicate it.

Until an effective method of eliminating spam is found you can make use of the spam measures we have available for use with your email. Each email address you have can be configured to filter spam at three possible levels.

If used in conjunction with filters on your email client, you can reduce the amount of spam you have to deal with manually.

Level 1 - Tag Headers of Suspected Spam (default setting)

This level is set by default for all new email accounts. Therefore, to use this level you do not need to ask us to change your email settings because all email will have hidden headers inserted as per this article.

With the exception of Outlook Express it is possible to use these headers to filter most email.

Level 2 - Mark Obvious Spam with [SPAM] in the Subject Line

As with the above setting this level will add hidden headers to all incoming email. In addition the subject line of the email will be prefixed with [SPAM] if SpamAssassin scores the email around 5.0 for possible spam.

To make use of this level you can filter the subject line within your email client to send this type of email to a special folder for revue (recommended) or the recycle bin. This is the minimum level you can use with Outlook Express.

Level 3 - Delete Obvious Spam Before it is Delivered

In addition to the features of the 2 previous levels this level of filtering will delete the email before it reaches you if the SpamAssassin score is above 8.

Warning: If an email scores around 5 with SpamAssassin we consider it most probably spam. If the email scores 8 or more we consider it to be almost certainly spam. However, this is not a foolproof method and there is always the chance of a false positive that will result in legitimate email being deleted. Request the highest level filtering at your own risk.
